Spotlight on ORHS:

Before The Lake Dog Project was born, I asked countless lake residents which causes they care about, and The Oconee Regional Humane Society was a common thread!  Being at the helm of this project and partnering with ORHS has only reinforced my belief in community and compassion. They are more than just an animal shelter. They’re a beacon of hope, a hub where pets transition from moments of despair to tales of transformation. From rescue & adoption to medical treatments and everything in between, ORHS has been the guiding star for countless pets and their caregivers. Achieving milestones solely on the generosity of individuals and corporations, without any government aid, is commendable. They truly resonate with the essence of The Lake Dog Project: capturing beauty, building connections, and radiating love.

So, if you’re as passionate as I am about these lake tales and have a furry friend with stories waiting to be told, hop on board! Let’s craft memories, celebrate our canines, and contribute to a community cause.

So how can you take part?

Epic 7-Day UK Mother/Daughter Roadtrip through England and West Wales

A horse with long hair standing in a grassy field.

Some of you may know that I just returned from a long overdue trip to see my family in the UK.  While I was there my Mum and I embarked on a pretty epic week-long road trip around South East England and Wales.    Anticipating a mix of family visits, quick photo stops, and new discoveries, we packed our bags and set off.  Here’s a rundown on what we got up to:

Day 1 – Cotswolds

Leaving Buckinghamshire behind, Mum and I embarked on a whistle-stop tour of the Cotswolds. Bourton-on-the-Water, Broadway the Lavender fields at Snowshill welcomed us with their classic English charm. As day turned to night, we found ourselves in Historic Gloucester, ready to rest up for the journey ahead.

Day 2 – Ledbury

The journey continued to Ledbury. We were visiting my brother and his girlfriend, both Police Officers with the Gloucestershire Constabulary, and meeting their new partner, K9 Zeus was a particular highlight….of course, he had to have his own portrait session!

Day 3 – Ledbury

Ledbury’s history embraced us as we explored the town, with camera in hand, I managed to capture some charming photos of local dogs. Later on, dinner at The Olive Tree, an Italian spot in town, rounded off a great day.

Day 4 – Much Marcle to Conwy

Breakfast at the Home of the famed “Stowford Press” Cider at Weston’s brewery in the adorably named village of ‘Much Marcle’ set us up for our journey to Wales. After a backroad detour involving narrow lanes and MANY sheep and checking into the Shelbourne Hotel in Llandudno, we met with my talented friend and Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Kevin Morgans in Conwy. Despite our initial concerns about the weather for our photo session in the Snowdonia mountains, luck was on our side. Like magic, as we left the car park on foot, the clouds parted, allowing us to photograph the Carneddau Ponies with a stunning sunset and the Irish Sea as our backdrop.

Day 5

Luck remained on our side as the weather Gods smiled upon us during another (very early) mountain expedition with Kevin. Mum indulged in a slower-paced morning back at the hotel, while I Kevin hiked into the mountains again to visit our beautiful equine friends and burned through many camera batteries and memory cards.  Photographers – watch this space for updates on some workshop/retreat plans Kevin and I have in the works for next year!

After a quick stop at Harlech Castle and a lovely chat with one of the owners of Harlech Castle Gift Shop, the day took a nostalgic turn with a visit to Dyffryn Ardudwy, a place Mum had cherished memories of from her childhood. My mum has wanted to visit this beach again for years, she hasn’t been there since staying at the campsite with her parents and brothers when she was a little girl.

A dog sits on a sand dunes with a blue leash.

We stayed a little while on the blustery beach, where I was able to capture a shot of a passing Bedlington terrier named Jeff at the beach’s iconic entrance between the sand dunes, as the storm clouds rolled in behind.  Back at the campsite, The Fish & Chip shop was still there, just as my Mum remembers it from 50+ years ago…of course, we weren’t going to pass up the opportunity for Fish & Chips by the sea!

Nanteos House in Aberystwyth awaited us. This historic mansion, formerly owned by The Powell family, played a role in our family history. The “big house” as my mum remembers it being called, sits just a few miles outside of Aberystwyth and was once a hub of activity (think scaled down, Downton Abbey type of place), but is now a hotel and popular wedding venue. Our connection ran deep, as my Mum’s great-grandfather, Amos Landers Hopkins, had once been their head gardener for many years. He lived in the lodge house with his wife and children, where my great-grandmother was later born.  Unbeknownst to Mum, I had booked us a two-night stay at Nateos House, allowing us some time to truly soak up its history

Day 6

Our stay at Nanteos Mansion also took us to nearby Aberystwyth beach when I was quick to break out my camera to capture some of the many happy dogs during their evening stroll on the boardwalk.  I highly recommend The Glengower for some local fare and a great view of the sunset over the beach.

Day 7 – Breakfast at Nanteos was followed by an enlightening tour with historian Janet Joel, who shared stories and insights that intertwined with our family’s past.  The Powell family’s history with hunting dogs, known as Nanteos Harriers, struck a chord, resonating with our love for dogs. Our tour included, to my delight, a stop at the old stable block, which unfortunately has seen far better days.  Closing my eyes and inhaling the musty aroma of the years gone by, I could still a faint whiff of that unmistakably sweet smell of horse.  A visit to Janet Joel’s website will offer a deeper dive into Nanteos’ rich history.

The trip culminated in a reluctant farewell to our Welsh roots, taking us back to English soil. The road trip, spanning over 500 miles, 2 countries, and lots of dogs and ponies was more than just a road trip – it was an experience, blending family history with new adventures and memories. A trip well-spent, and one that I would love to repeat sometime soon!

Golden Hour Horse & Dog Portraits | Summit Equestrian, Madison, GA

I’m not going to lie, when I saw how big Baloo was against Evie’s small stature and the long grass in the gorgeous sun-drenched pasture, I was expecting to have a bit of a battle on our hands with Baloo trying to graze the whole time. I briefed Evie on how to handle this, as I do with every client. Baloo just stood there like the perfect gentleman, only breaking his pose to snuggle with Evie. What a sweetheart! Before the session, I had told Evie no matter what he does, just smile and laugh at him like he’s the best horse on the planet (which of course, he is)…Evie took this tip and RAN with it, right from the get-go, she shone for the camera- effortlessly switching between cute snuggly giggles and flashing a smile at the camera, all while handling her giant horse like a pro.

During the planning process, we had discussed Evie’s bond with animals. Evie’s Mom, Kendra placed particular emphasis on how important it was for me to capture Evie as the resilient and brave young woman she is becoming, or as she put it “her little badass”, particularly in her equestrian endeavors…. and just within the first 5 mins we had captured Evie’s badassery in its truest form.

We went on to include some portraits with Mack, their big hairy golden retriever. Oh, what a bundle of joy she is! Trying to make Mack sit still was like trying to capture sunlight in a jar. But in her classic retriever manner, Mack was so irresistibly fluffy and adorable that she stole the show. When we attempted the coveted “run to me” shot, she bounded towards the camera and promptly sat on me for cuddles – I was in love!  We even snapped a few portraits of Evie’s sister, bright and spirited she snuggled into Mack’s soft fun and shone for the camera, just like Evie – She will no doubt get her own portrait session someday soon!

I couldn’t help but notice a certain magic in Evie’s presence with the animals. She seemed to be an animal whisperer, connecting effortlessly with them. Whether it was Baloo, who behaved like a saint during our bareback shots, or Mack, with her lively antics, or with the tiny little kitten that showed up for attention just as we were wrapping up, Evie was a natural with them all.

We moved on to do an outfit change and more portraits at other locations…And speaking of the locations – what a GORGEOUS sprawling property! Being at Summit Equestrian, on the outskirts of Madison, Georgia, was like being immersed in a 360-degree experience, like a video game, with so many big old trees and meandering gravel roads. The place was dripping in beauty at every turn, and the gorgeous evening light made it even more beautiful! I could have shot there all day and not run out of enchanting spots to frame Evie’s unique connection with her animal friends.

Evie’s session was not just about capturing stunning portraits; it was about capturing love, connections, joy, and the raw essence of being at peace and in her element, with the animals she loves. I can’t wait to see where Evie’s vibrant energy takes her next. Until next time, keep shining, little badass!

Sweet “Sophie” | Miniature Dashund | Faces of Harmony Project

Playful close-up shot of a longhair chocolate dapple miniature dachshund licking its nose in a studio portrait against a white backdrop.

Sophie, the adorable longhair chocolate dapple miniature dachshund, arrived as a tiny puppy and instantly became the center of celebration for her parents Randy & Tina. This joyful little bundle quickly filled their Lake Oconee home with delight.

Adorable longhair chocolate dapple miniature dachshund captured in a sitting pose on a white studio backdrop.

Sophie was the runt of a litter of nine siblings. The breeder was astonished by her tiny stature, as she had never encountered a runt so small before…but her vibrant energy and lovable personality overshadowed her small size and she quickly captured their hearts.

Inspired by the loss of their previous dachshunds, Sophie’s family decided not to wait any longer to welcome another furry companion into their lives. Sophie’s playful nature and boundless energy brought immeasurable joy, turning their home into a lively and loving haven.

The “Faces of Harmony” portrait session perfectly captured Sophie’s charming essence. Her irresistible cuteness was evident throughout, even as she tired herself out. Her playful antics were so much fun to photograph and have made her an instant favorite among the staff and furry friends at Paws and Play in Eatonton GA, where she is a regular guest.

To celebrate their deep connection and the happiness Sophie has brought to their lives, Tina and Randy chose to create a collection of their favorite portraits to display around their home, each one showcases Sophie’s unique personality and serves as a daily reminder of the love and joy she brings to them.

“River” the Boykin Spaniel from Lake Oconee, Georgia | Faces of Harmony Project

River became part of the family as a special gift for Jenny’s son’s 18th birthday, instantly winning the hearts of Jenny and her husband with his adorable lips getting stuck in his teeth and his big golden eyes sparkling with love. His affectionate nature and humorous antics brought immense joy and companionship to their lives.

In a time of grieving after the loss of Jenny’s beloved Yorkshire Terrier, River entered their lives and provided solace and healing. His presence brought a renewed sense of love and attachment, and together, they embarked on a journey of healing, forming a connection that words cannot fully describe.

River’s constant need for companionship perfectly matched Jenny’s lifestyle. He thrived on their presence, faithfully by their side, displaying loyalty and affection with every wag of his tail. River’s loving and caring nature deeply touched their lives, forging a bond that would withstand the test of time.

Recognizing River’s unique qualities and the beauty he brought to their lives, Jenny felt compelled to preserve his spirit, along with his adorable lip quirks, through a portrait session with me. River eagerly participated, bringing along his favorite toy, his beloved “man.” As the camera clicked and I made my playful “face noises,” River couldn’t resist responding with endearing head tilts and a bright expression that exuded his playful personality.

Through the portrait session, hosted by Harmony Pet Resort, we captured River’s crazy and loving self, freezing not only his cheeky face but also his captivating and endearing character. One of the cherished treasures from the session is a wrapped canvas, soon to be displayed in Jenny’s kitchen, where she can enjoy it every day.

Fall Horse & Rider Portraits at Windsor Stables | Arden & Calamari | Milton, Georgia

Equestrian portraits in Georgia: Long-standing vision realized through a portrait session at Windsor Stables.

On a gorgeous fall day, Arden and her soulful boy, Calamari graced my camera lens at Windsor Stables in Milton, Georgia for their Horse & Rider portrait experience.

Arden’s journey with horseback riding began when she was a child. Always active, Arden requested to give horseback riding a try, her wish was granted…but only after she had tried everything else on the track and field! Ever since then, Arden and her horses have been inseparable. Her dedication to sports and passion for equestrianism has proven beneficial, guiding Arden to be hard working, focused, and ultimately accepted into eight top schools.

Despite Calamari being a little fidgety that day, Arden, who was about to celebrate her 20th birthday, handled him effortlessly, never once losing her patience with him. The session was a delightful medley of affectionate posing, candid shots, and some giggles in between.

Arden’s Mom, Jacqueline’s desire for this portrait session with Cal was not a whim but a long-standing vision….one that Arden did not share but jumped into willingly nonetheless.  This is common among my younger clients, I think sometimes is just because their parents are the ones who notice how quickly they grow and change, making each milestone more sentimental and the desire to freeze time and hit pause on their child’s growing up increasingly stronger with each year that whizzes by.  Regardless of who is the driving force behind doing a portrait session with me, even the most resistant subjects have a great time and love their portraits.  We all leave with sore cheeks from smiling and I often hear “ Wow, that was so much more fun than I imagined it would be”.

Georgia equestrian artistry: Gallery-worthy triptych display of wrapped photo canvases celebrating the vibrant and enchanting portraits of a rider and her show horse.

Seeing Arden in her show attire, with Calamari looking regal as ever, was a sight to behold. For the latter half of the session, Arden changed into a stunning mint green dress paired with white western boots, a look she carried effortlessly. The contrast between the formal equestrian attire and the casual dress perfectly encapsulated Arden’s personality: an accomplished equestrian who is also a vibrant and fun-loving young woman.

Not a family to do things by halves, Arden’s parents had plans for a significant revamp of their home decor. It’s been a while since their last family portraits – when Arden was just five years old!

They envisioned replacing the existing canvases adorning their long wall in the room that Arden affectionately calls the “museum room” with fresh portraits of Arden and her majestic horse.  And a large framed statement piece from this session was destined for the wall above the couch in the den.

Asides from Arden’s impeccably elegant hands and fairy-like grip on the reins – seriously, it makes all the difference when a rider doesn’t “death grip” a mangled bundle of reins; what struck me the most during this session was the palpable bond between Arden and Calamari. I witnessed a depth of connection and understanding that was nothing short of beautiful.  I’m sure that our paths will cross again in the future, but for now, these timeless portraits of a girl and her horse will serve as a testament to their unbreakable bond and shared journey.

Why You Need White Background Portraits of Your Dog | Georgia Dog Photographer

When it comes to the dogs in our life, it can feel as though no amount of time will be long enough. Whether your furry friend is a family pet or a working dog, creating a lasting piece of artwork is the perfect way to celebrate their place in your life. While traditional outdoor portraits are always fun and exciting, creating a statement piece of art will level your home décor game up a notch!

white-background-dog-photo

You can achieve that exact outcome with professional white background portraits of your dog.

The best thing about scheduling white background photos is that you can fill your home with artsy details or goofy faces. There are no rules when it comes to the perfect white background portrait for your home.

So let’s break down a few reasons why you need to schedule white background portraits of your dog.

Preserving Your Dog’s Memory

It would be near impossible for us to forget the wiggly tails that greet us everyday. With that being said, there can never be enough photos for you to display and cherish in your home.

Nowadays, especially with social media and technology, it is not unfamiliar to see friends sharing photos of their dogs. But this is not a new trend, there are ancient artifacts depicting dogs posing with humans in all civilizations! Having something on the wall to fondly look back on as you walk through your home can spark happy memories even after our pets have left us.

Showcasing Their Personality

Remembering our dogs is one thing, but showcasing the cute little quirks they have can personalize your dog’s portrait. One of the best parts about a white background portrait is that you can highlight their personality. Yes, that means those unique ears, head tilts, or funny faces your dog makes without the distraction of an outdoor backdrop.

Picture this (pun intended), we get that perfect sitting portrait against that fresh white backdrop followed by your goofy friend crossing their eyes and pointing their nose up because they can smell a T-R-E-A-T.

Priceless.

Telling A Story

dog-head-tilt-photo

So we’ve covered the memory and personality that makes up exactly who your dog is, but let’s talk about reasons to display them in your home. We are preserving the place your dog has in your home and telling a story through one of a kind wall art. Seeing a grouping of portraits against a white background featuring your furry friend will tell their story in the perfect way for you.

While the proper and posed portraits are nice, pairing those with details that showcase their personality will tie a storyline of who your dog truly is.

Creating A Piece of Discussion in Your Home

printed-dog-artwork

The final and arguably most important reason I’d like to highlight on why scheduling white background portraits of your dog should be on the top of your list is stepping up your home décor game. Displaying a large statement piece above the mantel or a grouping of wall pieces in the dining room will spark discussion from guests in your home.

Hosting friends and family in your home can sometimes have that awkward, “hey I have that canvas in my house too” moment. Displaying your one of a kind portrait of your dog will leave you being the talk of the town.

As you can see, there are plenty of reasons that scheduling white background portraits of your dog is a good idea. But do we honestly need another reason to celebrate the love and appreciation we have for our four legged friends?

Are you ready to build one of a kind artwork of your dogs with a white background? Let’s set up a time to chat and begin your portrait journey today!

You may already have a date scheduled with your photographer and now you are here desperately searching for a direction, look no further. I am still here to help!

Coat Color

The first step in planning out a color scheme for your wardrobe is what color is your dog’s coat? We certainly don’t want to wear an outfit that completely matches your dog, we would lose a lot of detail. Try using pastels with a few pieces of contrast and texture throughout your outfit, this will create dimension to your portraits. Adding a soft contrast to both you and your dog while still tying your portrait together is the perfect way to set your pet session up for success. While coat color is an important baseline to planning out what colors you want to wear with your dog, you also want to consider the location and season of your portraits.

Location & Weather

After deciding which colors work best with your dog it’s time to consider your surroundings and the weather. While a leather jacket layered over your favorite long sleeved dress sounds amazing, you don’t necessarily want to wear that when it’s 92 degrees mid summer. Avoid sweating or shivering by planning for seasonal weather on the day of your portraits. Just how we don’t want to worry about temperatures, we also want to consider the location and surroundings of your portraits. If you plan to pose near a rich and green tree line, try to lean away from green tones in your wardrobe, instead, try to wear soft neutral shades within your outfit. This allows you and your dog to stand out perfectly in your portrait! Now that we have a steady foundation for what colors you should wear in your photos it’s time for the final piece, your Walls!

Your Walls

I know what you’re thinking, but your walls play a vital role in how your finished artwork looks in your home and it actually starts in the beginning! If you have a specific place in mind that you hope to display your photos with your dog, it’s a lot easier to plan ahead of time. For example, if your walls are within the nude to brown family, you will want to avoid locations that have a large amount of those colors especially if your dog is brown. You don’t want to wear an outfit that makes both you and your dog blend into the background or worse, stick out like a sore thumb! Instead, lean more towards neutral colors in the blue family or even rock a cream statement piece with darker accents for depth! After you’ve finished your session with your dog, it is much easier to decide where you want to display your favorite portraits in your home!

Now it’s time to build the perfect color scheme for you and your dog’s upcoming portraits. Just remember: Coat, Location and Walls! You’ve got this!

BONUS

After establishing the perfect color scheme to wear for your photos with your furry pal, don’t forget to consider what breed they are. While this isn’t applicable to every dog, you may have a unique breed with distinguished features like a curly or long coat. I recommend avoiding a wardrobe that has textures like your dog. For example, if you have a standard poodle, you would want to avoid layering your outfit with a Sherpa jacket. While we love our dogs dearly, we don’t necessarily want to become them!

Want the stress of deciding what to wear for photos with your dog? Let me take care of it and you can enjoy an afternoon of memories and fun with your dog! We can chat more about how I can help preserve the bond you have with your dogs!

Pants or Dresses | What Should I Wear for Portraits with My Dog

Pants or Dresses | What Should I Wear for Portraits with My Dog

One of the most common questions I hear asked when it comes to professional portraits with your dogs is whether someone should wear pants or a dress. If you have ever worked with me, you already know my answer is both!

When working with me, I am here to make life as easy and enjoyable as possible which means I will help design your entire wardrobe from start to finish! Want to know more about what you can experience when hiring me as your professional photographer? Click HERE and we can chat today!

If you have already scheduled portraits with your furry friend and the date is quickly approaching without an outfit in sight, you still have time! It can be daunting to decide what exactly you want to wear, especially whether you should wear pants or a dress. So let’s break down a few ways you can rock your session and avoid feeling awkward or uncomfortable.

Pants

Taking into consideration whether you’d like to wear pants, a skirt or dress is entirely up to what you feel most comfortable in. Do you feel most comfortable wearing pants? That’s totally fine, these are your portraits and you have to feel authentic while taking them! Taking a boot cut jean and pairing it with a simple fitted top and textured jacket adds balance and depth to your portrait. Tie that together with your favorite boots and you are ready to wrangle your dog for portraits. Pants also allow for poses that dresses may not.

Dress

If you enjoy an excuse to dress up, now is your chance to add something nicer to your closet or reuse that dress you wore to your friend’s wedding. When selecting a dress, avoid loud patterns that can distract from your portrait. Instead, add textures like ruffles or lace then layer it with a fun jacket! If you love the idea of wearing a dress for portraits with your dog, avoid short hemlines, they can be restricting when it comes to posing especially when handling your dog!

While I always encourage a formal outfit and a casual style to offer variety to your finished artwork, make sure you ask your photographer what they suggest for outfits changes and styles as well.

So there you have it, now it’s time to get out there and channel your inner fashionista to knock your portraits with your dog out of the park!

👆BONUS: Keep in consideration if you are body conscious that you may want to avoid restricting materials and opt for textures. Either way, you are still going to look fierce with your four legged companion by your side!

Eliza & Corey | Horse & Rider Portraits

While attending the end of year banquet for the GHJA, Eliza and her mom Abbie noticed an exciting donation for horse and rider portraits with me. They found it was perfect timing as Eliza was an upcoming senior in need of senior portraits! While they had family portraits created about 5 years prior, they had not worked with a photographer who specialized in equine portraits or a full service experience.

While Eliza does not typically enjoy having her portraits taken, she was excited to have this experience with her Holsteiner, Corey. We knew we wanted to create these portraits at Eliza’s favorite place, the barn. While we wandered around the grounds of MDS Farms in Canton, Georgia we took advantage of the well groomed driveways, pastures and stunning barn doorways.

Abbie looked back on how the day of experience was by saying:

“Eliza enjoyed the whole experience and how we purposefully scheduled their portraits for when you can get those sunset shots. We felt Eliza out and always kept her involved in the experience. In the past, a lot of professional photographers put her in unnatural positions and made her feel very posed where it never felt that way for her senior portraits.”

There was a specific vision in mind when creating Eliza’s portraits, after our planning call going over how I would be shooting and designing their session, Eliza sent many photo ideas of what she wanted to wear. We ultimately landed on a casual black and white romper, jean jacket and sandals followed by a floor length formal lilac gown. Both outfits complimented Corey’s dark bay coat against the beautiful natural backdrop.

One thing Abbie recalls is how we clearly use a well-organized and laid out process for each client from start to finish. When it came to planning those must have shots for Eliza, she knew she wanted to get on Corey bareback with a flowy dress. It took some time and effort, but eventually the beautiful dress you see pictured brought her dream photo to life.

While Eliza can be shy, there was always a sense of comfort and confidence for this natural animal lover. Abbie likes to say that Eliza is your typical barn girl who loves horses more than people and that was the exact person Corey needed in his life. They had purchased Corey from a professional who had imported him to the United States and he had very little experience with horse girls in general. Eliza has worked tirelessly with him on social skills and how to have a genuine connection with people. While he was never mean, he just didn’t have the urge to socialize with anyone. She would often take a book and sit in his stall for hours without any acknowledgement until he realized she had treats with her. Today, Corey is known to be waiting right at the stall door as soon as he knows someone is walking by.

It was Abbie’s goal to capture the relationship Eliza and Corey worked so hard to build throughout their portraits and that is exactly what we did. At the time, Abbie was in the process of building their home and had not yet moved in, she was able to send me measurements of the rooms we planned to decorate and still order exactly what would fit that wall. She remembered thinking how she’d never buy a canvas that large had she not known through the virtual assistance that it would compliment their home perfectly. Today, their large canvas’ are displayed in the foyer as well as Eliza’s room and their album is something they look back on fondly.

Room Mockup for Eliza’s Statement Canvas Portrait

While Eliza is now off to college and missing Corey terribly, she looks forward to bringing him out once her trainer Melinda Sise of MDS Farms has completed her work with him. Together they compete frequently in the Equitation classes and have a bright future awaiting them.
